Italy celebrates in Carate Brianza a full "Tricolore" podium

The Stage 4 of the 30th Giro Rosa Iccrea is 100% Italian podium: Letizia Borghesi (Team Aromitalia - Basso Bikes - Vaiano) from Ville d'Anaunia (Trento) took her greatest victory in career beating in a bunch sprint Nadia Quagliotto (Alé - Cipollini) and Chiara Perini (BePink). This trio was the breakaway of the day.

Arrivo tappa 4

The decisive attack began at half stage after the start in Lissone, with Borghesi and Perini with the Dutch Anouska Koster (Virtu Cycling), who soon couldn't stay with the two Italians. Nadia Quagliotto chased them lately while passing from Molteno (Lecco) and the gap went up to about five minutes. Letizia Borghesi leaded at the intermediate sprint in Sovico, then she tried a finisseur attack at 4 kms to go. Borghesi was taken so the stage win was decided with a sprint for the trio in Carate Brianza. Nadia Quagliotto was first until the last meters but Borghesi could beat her in the last meter. Quagliotto ended second, Perini was third. A full Italian podium didn't happen since 2015, when Annalisa Cucinotta won a stage in Pozzo d'Adda beating Marta Bastianelli and Elena Cecchini. Bastianelli was also the last Italian stage winner, in 2017 in Polla (Salerno).

The stage winner Letizia Borghesi, hugged by her parents at the award ceremony, commented: "It's the greatest day of my life, I wanted to go in breakaway because I was feeling well. We did agree first but before the finish the collaboration finished. I gave my best at the sprint, this win is for my family and my team".

Marianne Vos won the sprint with 42''; Katarzyna Niewiadoma keeps the Maglia Rosa.

Special guests of the stage were the two-times World Champion Gianni Bugno, the winner of a Milano - Sanremo Claudio Chiappucci and the Race Director of the Giro d'Italia Stefano Allocchio.
